Islamabad: For the people crushed in the mill of inflation, the sweet taste of sugar is now becoming a dream. According to the latest reports, the price of sugar per kg in the federal capital, Islamabad, has reached a surprising level of Rs 195. In Rawalpindi, Karachi, and Peshawar, the rates have reached Rs 190 per kg, while in Sukkur, Larkana, Multan, Sialkot, and other cities, prices have also made the lives of the common man miserable.
In Quetta, sugar is 186; in Khuzdar and Sialkot, it is 185; while in Hyderabad, Bahawalpur, and Bannu, it has reached Rs 180 per kg.
According to officials, 765,000 metric tons of sugar were exported from Pakistan during the current fiscal year, earning more than Rs 112 billion, but experts say that the 2,200 percent increase in exports actually caused a shortage in the local market and uncontrolled prices.
Consumers in the markets are seen in a state of anger, frustration, and helplessness and are raising the question of what price is being sold abroad when there is no sugar at home. This crisis has become a strong question against government policy, export priorities, and hoarding.
