Pakistan has issued a tender to procure fresh cargoes from global suppliers in another move to meet its additional LNG requirement in September.
The fresh tender issued by Pakistan LNG Limited (PLL) requires the LNG cargo to reach Pakistan between September 12 and 16. According to official tender records, the last date for submission of bids is September 8, and the offers will be opened on the same day.
The development comes at a time when it has become more difficult for Pakistan to procure LNG urgently from the global market than before. Earlier attempts were made to procure the cargo for September, but due to price issues, the required cargo could not be obtained. According to recent reports, the highest price offer received earlier was also not accepted.
LNG plays a vital role in Pakistan’s energy system. If the availability of local gas is not sufficient to meet the demand, the shortfall is met by imported LNG. Regasified LNG is an important fuel, especially for the power generation sector.
However, the current global situation has made this procurement expensive and complex. Along with international prices, shipping costs and the geographical situation of the region also affect the price of imported cargo. In this situation, the challenge for Pakistan is not only to obtain the cargo but also to purchase it at an acceptable price.
The success of the fresh tender will depend on the offers received on September 8. If suppliers offer competitive prices, PLL can move towards purchasing the required cargo.
On the other hand, if prices remain high once again, Pakistan may have to find more alternatives to meet its September requirements. Therefore, the new bids are being considered important in the context of both the country’s energy needs and import costs.
The outcome of the fresh tender will also clarify the extent to which it is feasible for Pakistan to procure additional LNG in the current global market.
