The government has once again slightly increased the prices of petroleum products, under which petrol has become more expensive by 45 paise and high-speed diesel by Rs 1.16 per litre. After the latest revision, petrol has been fixed at Rs 325.43 per litre and diesel at Rs 383.95 per litre.

This change in the prices of petroleum products has come in the context of the global energy market and the local pricing mechanism. According to the Ministry of Energy, the government is also considering reforms to ensure transparency in the petroleum pricing system and price determination according to market conditions.

In the latest decision, the increase in the price of petrol has been kept relatively low, while the price of diesel has increased more. According to the new prices, consumers will have to pay Rs 325.43 for a litre of petrol and Rs 383.95 for high-speed diesel.

A small change in the price of petrol mostly affects the daily travel expenses of private car, motorcycle and auto rickshaw users. In contrast, since diesel is used more in trucks, buses, agricultural machinery and other heavy vehicles, its price increase is also linked to transportation and freight costs.

However, given the limited level of the current increase, it is not appropriate to immediately estimate a significant increase in the prices of essential commodities. Its real impact will depend on the extent to which the transport and other business sectors pass on the additional costs to consumers.

The prices of petroleum products in Pakistan are not determined solely by global crude oil prices. Import costs, exchange rates, petroleum levies, other government taxes and local marketing and distribution costs also factor into the final price. Therefore, even a small change in the global market can sometimes affect local prices.

In recent months, the government has also been considering possible changes in the petroleum pricing mechanism. According to the Ministry of Energy, the Petroleum Pricing Committee has reviewed the global practices and local market conditions, while the government is also considering proposals for amendments to the refinery policy to increase local diesel production and reduce import dependence.

Notifications related to prices have been issued continuously by the Petroleum Division in recent times, which reflect the dynamic pricing system in the sector. Official records show that notifications for revision of petroleum product prices were issued several times during July as well.

After the latest increase, the main change for consumers is that the price of petrol has increased to Rs 325.43 and the price of high-speed diesel to Rs 383.95 per litre. Future prices will depend on various factors, including the global oil market, import costs, rupee appreciation and government levies.
