Political Tensions on the Indus River: Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s Message to India

Pakistan People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has given a strong message to the Indian government while addressing a rally in Sukkur, saying that any interference on the Indus River will not be tolerated. He said that if India looked at our river, the response would be severe. “This river is ours; either our water will flow in it or their blood,” he said. Bilawal Bhutto alleged that India wants to divert the world’s attention from the real issues by accusing Pakistan after every incident, while our forces are ready to give a befitting reply to every challenge.

He said that every citizen has to stand as a defender of Sindhu’s rights and unite to thwart the enemy’s intentions. Bilawal Bhutto further said that consultation of all the provinces on the issue of water is necessary and the construction of any new canal will be possible only with public support and inter-provincial consensus. He said Sindh had already submitted its concerns to the Council of Common Interests and the PPP had taken a principled stand that no decision would be implemented without consultation.

He announced that a big public meeting will be held in Mirpur on May 1, followed by an important meeting of the Council of Common Interests on May 2, where important decisions regarding water distribution and the canal system are expected. Paying tribute to the struggle of the workers, Bilawal Bhutto said that if this political consciousness had not been awakened, today the voice of the people would not have been heard even on a basic issue like water.
