Power Division launches smart metering reforms across the country

The Power Division has announced the formal launch of smart metering reforms across the country. According to a Power Division spokesperson, it has been decided to install modern smart meters in discos to improve the electricity transmission system and restore consumer confidence.

The spokesperson said that currently there are about 38 million consumers in the country, of which 80 percent have single-phase connections. The installation of smart meters for these consumers will help bring transparency and accuracy in the billing process.

According to the spokesperson, the price of smart meters has been reduced from Rs 20,000 to Rs 15,000 so that there is no additional burden on consumers.
The Power Division further said that the government is expected to save Rs 25 billion annually as a result of transparent and competitive procurement.

Officials say that the implementation of smart metering is expected to reduce electricity theft and improve the efficiency of the billing system, which will further strengthen consumer confidence.
