Iran gives a new formula for regional security

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has once again stressed the need for diplomacy and regional cooperation amid the ongoing conflict with the US and Israel. He says Iran does not want war and is prioritising its defence in the current situation.

In an interview, the Iranian president said that Tehran has no war with the Gulf countries. He expressed his desire for better relations with other countries in the region, including the United Arab Emirates. According to him, Iran’s main concern is the US military installations in the region.

Pezeshkian urged regional countries to consider joint arrangements for their security. In his opinion, Middle Eastern countries can solve their problems directly by reducing their dependence on external powers.

This stance of the Iranian president has come at a time when diplomatic activities are also underway in the region along with tensions. Pakistan is making contacts to bring the US and Iran back to the negotiating table. The Pakistani ambassador to the United Nations also recently said that Islamabad will continue to try to bring both sides back to the negotiating table.

Pezeshkian also described Pakistan’s role in a positive light. According to him, Islamabad has made significant efforts to reduce tensions. Pakistan and Qatar mediated a reconciliation between the US and Iran in June. Tehran later demanded that Washington implement the terms of the agreement.

The Iranian president has signalled that the path to negotiations on the nuclear issue remains open. Tehran has previously said that if the US returns to the terms of the memorandum of understanding reached in June, Iran will also fulfil its promises. In this regard, the lifting of sanctions is one of Iran’s top priorities.

The current situation in the Middle East has also increased diplomatic challenges for Pakistan. Islamabad has close ties with Saudi Arabia, while Iran is its main neighbour. Pakistan has emphasised maintaining contacts on both sides in the recent tensions.

Pazshkian also clarified Iran’s position on the issue of Saudi Arabia and the Houthis in Yemen. He said that Iran is not at direct war with Saudi Arabia and that the Houthis have their own issues.

The Iranian president also proposed a new security structure among the countries of the region. According to him, joint regional cooperation can prevent conflicts from turning into a full-scale war.

Asked about Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, Pazshkian denied speculation about his life and state role. According to him, the Supreme Leader continues to play his role in the system.

The Iranian president’s recent statements show room for negotiations along with a tough political stance. However, the lack of mutual trust between the United States and Iran remains a major obstacle to any new agreement.
