Section 144 imposed in Punjab

The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 in the province in view of possible security threats. The ban will be applicable in all districts from September 13 to September 17.

According to the order of the Punjab Home Department, gatherings of five or more people will not be allowed in public places, highways and open spaces during this period. Jalsa, rallies, processions, sit-ins and protests will also be banned.

According to the authorities, this step was taken following security inputs received by law enforcement and intelligence agencies. Reports have described public gatherings as vulnerable to possible terrorist attacks.

According to the Home Department, large gatherings include political rallies, public meetings, protests and other gatherings. The relevant agencies have recommended immediate security measures to deal with potential threats.

The order also prohibits the possession or display of all types of weapons in public places. Incitement or incitement to participate in prohibited gatherings will also not be allowed.

The government, however, has exempted several activities related to daily life from the ban. Wedding ceremonies, baraats, funeral prayers and burial gatherings will not be affected by the order.

Gatherings for worship in mosques and other places of worship will also be exempted. The ban will not apply to events held with the permission of courts, government institutions and relevant authorities.

Police, law enforcement agencies, intelligence agencies and security personnel on duty while performing their official duties will also be exempted from this ban.

The Punjab government says the main objective of the temporary ban is to protect the lives and property of citizens and maintain law and order in the province. Authorities have appealed to citizens to follow government orders during the ban period.
